Joan’s on Third Growing Slowly

When I say I live steps away from Joan’s on Third, I mean that literally. You’d think I’d be in there everyday, but a couple things keep me at bay: for one, I’d be about the size of this cow if I allowed myself to go no-holds-barred at Joan’s on a regular basis; secondly, it’s way too easy to spend $50+ on a last-minute we-have-nothing-for-dinner drop-in. But more than fretting over my waistline or even the cost - because self-control only goes so far when dealing with the deliciousness that is Joan’s on Third - it’s the madhouse the swathe of a shop becomes that saves me from complete overindulgence. So, when I heard Joan’s was expanding to what looks like three times the size, I immediately started envisioning a roomy Joan’s experience. That was about a million years ago. Every so often I inquire about the status. The latest update is six to eight weeks. That’s June, Joan; I say, make it happen! I understand the likelihood is that the place will be just as packed, only bigger. Alas, I’m willing to keep the dream alive.

I have the same feelings about Joan’s. The biggest reason I don’t go there more then 3 times a year is that it’s so crazy and cramped. Funny how Little Next Door is similar and yet it works.

I believe part of what is slowing down Joan’s expansion is the Beverly Wilshire Home Owners Association. I recently decided to no longer support them. They are concerned about parking and have threatened the city over this expansion.

I don’t know about the homeowner’s association, but parking on Third Street is a nightmare. It was bad enough a few years ago, what with all the service-oriented places like the nail and hair salons, and the few cafe’s. But now, with Joan’s, Toast, Doughboys, Little Next Door, and Quality, it’s become a madhouse. And then there’s people who park on Third and walk to the Grove as to not deal with the Grove parking situation. Like the parking structures around Santa Monica’s Third Street Promenade, Third Street in West Hollywood desperately needs at least two 4-story structures. They should raze the J Market and do it there. That’s the perfect spot to have a multi-story parking solution. It’s unfair to everyone else with a shop or that go to a ship on that street to lose their parking to Joan’s. Though I applaud them for their success and am glad they’re there. The city needs to step in at this point with some eminent domain action.

I don’t know if we need a parking structure. Gee maybe people could take the bus, ride a bike or walk. I do hate that half the street parking goes to valet pull up bullshit. Also this valet crap makes it such that no one walks around. It doesn’t feel as safe to walk around at night in LA as it does in NY or SF because no one gets out of their cars.

I walked my dogs past Joan’s on Sat and the were working on the expansion. There is dry wall and a lot work that’s completed in the new section. Shouldn’t be long before it’s done.
