I go hiking at Runyon Canyon a lot but rarely enter on Fuller. A couple weeks ago I happened to exit on Fuller and saw this bin of Gatorade and bottled water. At first, it looked like free drinks, but upon closer inspection I saw that the Gatorade sells for $2, water for $1, all on the honor system. Then, there was a tin can set up in the middle and I was surprised that though most of the drinks were gone, there was a bundle of ones in the can. Who knew RC hikers were so trustworthy? Went back yesterday to check it out and saw there’s a new lockbox system in place. Looks like someone was dipping into the well to quench their thirst for singles. Maybe they were heading to the Spearmint Rhino - the worst name ever! - after a rigorous hike and didn’t have time to get to the bank… Anyone know the entity or people behind the refreshments?

A few blocks from where I work in Kirkland, Washington is a coffee shop which has no prices and leaves it up to customers if and how much to pay. There is a locked box which one may slide in dollars and they also have a Credit card machine, but well not even advise you how much to charge.
It opened a few months ago and is doing okay.

I go to Runyon a lot, entering on Fuller, and the weekend staple of that entrance is the shaved ice cart. Have you ever seen it? This tub of drinks looks a lot like the tub of drinks that the shaved ice cart has when they’re around. Seems likely that they’re related. If you go on a weekend (I assume this isn’t from the weekend?) you should be able to figure out the answer. By the way, the shaved ice is awesome on a hot summer day! It’s like $2 or $3 and they have at least a dozen syrups to choose from.

the shave ice cart and the honor system tub are from one and the same - a guy (and his sweet white pit bull) who is often there manning the shave ice. he is an actor and proudly displays his head shot on the cart. when he is not around he leaves the tub of drinks, i saw him there tonight picking it up at dusk! what a great idea.
