Saturday me and the husband ventured up and off Benedict Canyon to preview Rachel Pally’s winter/holiday 2007 collection, held at the Sheats-Goldstein Residence, designed by John Lautner. I’d seen the home in magazines and books, but, I have to say, it was really spectacular in person. We only had access to one section of the house but that was enough to blow our minds. For all that glass, it’s surprisingly private, surrounded by big, leafy trees and far enough away from any other residence that you could walk around naked as long as someone wasn’t after you with binoculars. It’s that kind of architectural magnificence, combined with the weather and swathe of city below that keeps people dreamily coming to L.A.
Rachel Pally, known for her jersey creations, introduced cashmere pieces to her collection for winter/holiday. I’m definitely a fan of the designer, only 26 and a Berkeley grad, whose designs are most flattering on someone with a bit of shape. I wore one of her dresses to my rehearsal dinner, in fact.
I love these cardboard architectural models. We were in the upper right section of the house.
Ignore the people. I was trying to capture the walkway; that’s water and fish below.
This dining area looks like a posh ’80s boardroom.
Forget guests Rachel Leigh Cook and Taryn Manning, I was excited to see the owner of the home - none other than the crazy looking dude you see at all the NBA games!
I was picturing someone falling into this pool all night; the walk around it was a smidge tenuous.
The show was in this leather lounge-o-rama.
Hillary Rush, Hillary’s friend Anita, and Polina of Hillary Rush. A little vocab lesson. The name for all the folks who fly in from Kansas to go to Toast and then cross the street to shop at Hillary Rush in search of famous people? Toasters.
And the collection. Body-skimming or loose and drape-y, Pally’s clothes channel a sophisticated sexiness that L.A. could use more of. She has wonderful prints and earthy, saturated palettes.
Making orange really wearable.
This makes you want to play host at a dinner party with all your favorite people.

The leather lounge-o-rama looks like a scene from Jackie Treehorn’s house in The Big Lebowski.

… and Charlie’s Angel’s 2… not that it compares to The Big Lebowski.
The Goldstein [sorry, Sheats/Goldstein] house is one of the most photographed private residences in the country. Has been for decades. You’ve seen it more often than you know.
/About 25 Koi in that 1 ft deep pond. Some are massive. Clearly grown elsewhere, then moved to there.
