H&H Bagels at Whole Foods

May 22nd, 2007 · No Comments

Maybe I’m the only one who didn’t know this, but the bagels at Whole Foods (3rd and Fairfax, of course) in the bakery section are from NYC’s H&H Bagels. Like many a female college student in the mid-’90s, I ate grocery bags full of the non-fat, high-carb snack that should eat like a meal. As a result of my four-year overdose, I don’t eat bagels very often… but every once in awhile a freshly baked New York bagel cannot be beat. What about freshness, you say? The H&H guy with the samples said the bagels leave NYC 90% done; H&H flash freezes the bagels (he said like sushi, but I don’t know about the freezing process of sushi) with 10% of the work left for the Whole Foods bakery on this coast. The samples were mmm-mmm good. And why didn’t I know about this? The sample guy leaned in and said Whole Foods isn’t keen on H&H putting up signs in Whole Foods, but he’s working on it. Sounds like Whole Foods is trying to get over a bit on H&H. Wouldn’t WF just sell more bagels if people knew?
