Bizarre-o Boutique Inside Toast?!

June 5th, 2007 · 7 Comments

Was chatting with Carol at Rodan vs. Griffith and she mentioned to me the boutique by Toast. I thought she meant Avita, but she clarified, no, the boutique inside Toast. Uh, what? And there it is, a boutique called New Threads (which doesn’t have signage), carrying a mish-mash of Deha (a kind of lounge-y Italian label), Charlotte Tarantola tanks, Hale Bob dresses, a bin of pricey baby blankets, a bin of matches… it’s weird. I got some scoop from Hillary Rush that Toast already uses up its capacity for tables with all that outside seating, so there’s this space that goes unused: hence, the bizarre-o boutique. But who wants to shop amidst wafts of egg dishes and sandwiches? Ick. Toast is already incredibly annoying with the deluge of hipsters and wannabe hipsters who are willing to wait night and day for the chance to eat mediocre food in each other’s presence. This odd development is just another reason to avoid the place.

Seriously. I will never understand the lines of people who wait for this place. It’s like how I remember the Griddle up on Sunset back in the day, although I recall them having better food than toast. Do people still go there? Is the wait still over an hour?

I agree. The interest in Toast by the uber hip is bizar. Have you ever seen the house that toast built? It’s on W5th on the North side in the middle of the block between Sweetzer and La Jolla.

It’s the biggest F-U to the neighbors. It was originally a one story 1920’s spanish revival. It was torn down and built a huge mauseleum. The tallest largest house on the block. Yuck. The residents near toast hate the valets that service the business also.

    alex the sea turtle,

so, wait, it’s the Toast owners’ house on west 5th?

Yep the amazingly huge inappropriate home on the North side of the street is the Toast house.

They also bought a tear down on the block between Orlando and Sweetzer. It’s a little blue house that sits between an ugly mcmansion that has been under construction for 7 years and the newish white mcmansion that just sold for 2.3 million.

Lord knows what they plan for that blue house.

hi neighbor… I don’t think Toast’s food is *that* bad (they do reliable salad, anyhow, and their tomato soup is terrific) but yeah, it’s SO not worth the wait. on the other hand, at 10p when Joan’s is closed (and Doughboys is still dealing with their rat ‘n’ roach situation!) it’s perfect.

They have a store inside the restaurant because they are trying to get around the conditions the City imposed on them for parking, etc.
