I realize, like Kramer, I always wanted to smell like the beach. If you don’t recall the Seinfeld episode, here’s a quick rundown: Kramer has a meeting with the fragrance people at Calvin Klein to sell them on the idea of creating a scent that smells like a day at the beach - in busts Kramer, in his skivvies and shoes, smelling of the ocean. Much hilarity ensues. Fast forward a few beats and CK has stolen Kramer’s idea…
Through the years, I’ve bought a number of beachy scents and none of them really worked. I’m pretty sensitive to fragrance (can give me a serious migraine), and many were just too strong despite my hopeful attempts. Ah, but on a recent jaunt to Filly, I was introduced to CB Secret History’s At The Beach 1966 ($60). It’s amazingly accurate, as if you’re on a windswept beach inhaling all that oceanic goodness. So what is the swoon-inducing secret? A prime note of Coppertone 1967, an accord of North Atlantic, and base of Wet Sand, Seashell, Driftwood, and a smidge of Boardwalk. Not that I know the scientifics of notes and bases and accords, but it all comes together like a day at the beach, minus the sweat. If you’re in the L.A., get it at Filly; if not in L.A., get it online.
