Anonymous, who just left the following comment: ‘It’s official… The city denied Little Next Door to stay open til 9:30PM :(’
I’m desperate to know more! What’s the deal? What about all the restaurants open till late? I didn’t know they were trying to stay open till 9:30PM, but I’ve been telling everyone I know that I wish they’d morph into a wine bar at night. It would be a great addition to the area if it did. Why is the city denying us more Little Next Door?
Can you comment further or email me??? Or does anyone know more about this?

the city seems to have denied because the area on 3rd (and some very vocal neighbors) are reluctant to make extensions to licenses. i’m sure someone who attended one of the hearings can comment more on the specifics.
but who really cares anymore? LND is no longer what it was. when i moved to our hood from paris four years ago, i yearned — no, fantasized — about a place just like LND. and it was wonderful. until march i was the regular’s regular. lunch every day, breakfast most days. the staff was incredible (granted, the french helped…but the most gracious ones were the american girls). the food impeccable, the prices shockingly reasonable. i felt i had found a home.
but then they raised the prices on wine. they fired nearly all of the counter staff after one fateful weekend in march (one notable and friendly espresso maker remains). then they went to table service. the new staff is rude and insolent; they often treat non-french speakers with worse disdain than the worst waiter at some tourist trap on the champs.
the food is still good; the wine still the best value in our hood. but i haven’t returned in months — who wants to support a rude place that is intent on spotty table service when they had such a good thing going?
i mourn the death of the original little next door. that all said, the beautiful espresso machine still tempts me when i walk by…

There’s apparently one hardcore person in the neighborhood who basically blocks any expansion of permits and liquor licenses. Note that not a single place east of St. Nicks serves hard alcohol..
