Mugging at West 3rd Street and Croft Avenue

Speaking of crime, this is pretty shocking. Early Sunday morning, June 15 at nearly 4:00am, there was an armed robbery at West 3rd Street and Croft Avenue. Here’s the small print:

“Victims 1, 2 and 3 were walking on 3rd St when they were approached from behind by suspect #1. Suspect #1 pointed an unknown caliber handgun at the victims and ordered them all into some bushes. Once inside the bushes they were met by three other suspects. The suspects ordered the victims to give them their property. The victims, in fear of their lives, complied with the suspect’s demands and gave them $32,1100.00 worth of property. Susp Info: Four males, no other info on the suspect. Weapons used: Unknown caliber handgun.”

I have to say, I’ve never felt unsafe in the neighborhood, but I also haven’t ever been walking around at 4:00am, which clearly is to be avoided. West 3rd Street is just completely empty at that time of night, and much earlier. That’s a lot of property, too! Even for three people.

I feel mostly safe in this neighborhood. But I don’t take my safety for granted.

Going out to dinner we don’t both bring a walet, we also don’t wear 5k watches.

3 people with 30k worth of belongings? 15k worth of watches, 1k cash (330 each) whatelse? Blackberries, IPODs, expensive jewlery, handbags, hmmm somebody is padding this for their insurance.

I agree with the statements by Alex. I live in the area and I can’t imagine a reason to walk around at 4am, something also smells fishy with the $30K dollar amount.

I can’t believe it was a coincidence that those people out on a stroll at 4 a.m. met up with four muggers. Either the whole thing was staged, or the victims were employees or owners of a business in the area and they were specifically targeted by the robbers.

I had a friend who waited tables at a high-end restaurant near the San Francisco Opera House. The neighborhood muggers always knew the opera schedule, and knew to rob the waiters at the end of the night; that way, they would get the juicy tip money.

Who carries/wears $32,000 worth of stuff on them?!

A few years ago at 1AM on a Saturday morning, I was in my alley garage just off 1st St. near Sweetzer when 2 guys in an SUV pulled up, jumped out, and came at me, one with what looked like a gun in his hand. I ran past them up the alley, they chased for a few yards, then gave up and grabbed a duffel bag of old sweaters from my garage (ka-ching!) and split. I called the police and am still waiting for them to come take a report. I now never get out of my car at night with the garage door still open. And if you listen closely some nights, you can still hear me screaming for help like a little girl…

My neighbors son lives in a rental apartment at orange and sweetzer. He had a similiar incident to you Chris in his garage. But he complied and gave them his wallet and watch.

    @#1-#5:

Wow, you guys are talking out of your ass. Who carries $32,000 worth of property? Try lots of people…like women that wear diamond engagement rings, earrings, bracelets or other expensive jewelry. Maybe a high end video camera or still camera with lenses. Maybe the robbers took their car. It’s really not such a big stretch people…

I’m glad the victims weren’t hurt and whoever robbed them is probably in jail or dead right now or will be soon. God bless them, what a hellish life to rob people.

That being said, nothing good happens to anyone at 4am. People get robbed, beaten, shot, their car crashes, their house burns down, they get arrested…that’s what happens at 4am.

    re # 7
Bless them indeed, though, come on, walking around with $10,000+ worth of stuff on you, you don’t need much blessing. My wedding and engagement rings don’t come close to that.
I guess our economy is not so bad after all if that doesn’t seem like a big deal to some. hmm!

wait. regardless of what time it took place, and regardless of how much these people had on them, it still sucks.

i live on blackburn at edinburgh, and i was mugged last year one building over from my own apartment, at about 10:30 pm. I do know better than to walk around by myself late at night, but it wasn’t all that late, and the 1/4 block walk from my car to my apartment is pretty much inevitable. i don’t think i own $10,000+ worth of property — let alone carry it on my person, but between my wallet, my phone, and my camera, I think they took over $500 worth, which to some might seem like a lot — it’s all relative.
