Not sure what the deal is with this self storage going up on The Grove Drive, on the east side of The Grove and across from Pan Pacific Park, dubbed simply Farmers Market Self Storage. Is the thinking, short-termers set up in Park La Brea and other nearby rentals will need this? Maybe it’s not so odd, but it just seems kind of random.

It does seem very odd to me too, at first I thought it was storage for the Farmer’s Market merchants which they had at one time before the renovations. With the Markets parking lot overflowing regularly I would have thought more parking would have made more sense, but I guess brighter minds came up with this plan.

As someone who has used self storage, I will attest that it’s very useful in such a transient city like LA. The area around The Grove is one of the densest populations in the country, and to find a decent self-storage facility usually means heading way out west near Olympic/405 or down to the Culver City area. This place will be very successful. I’m glad it’s tucked into the rear of The Grove where it won’t be a big street-front blight.

This is a really dirty site (old oil wells), so it makes sense to put in this sort of facility. And it’s certainly unique to the neighborhood. The closest storage facilities I can think of are in the Media District on Highland.

I know most people in the neighborhood were begging Caruso to use the space for parking. Ideally parking for the Grove/Farmers Market workers who currently are provided with non. But I am sure Caruso did his calculations and this was the most cost affective project.

I guess it’s a nice marketing strategy, I don’t feel awkward with it, it just seems to be unnecessary..
by the way I found out that Austin mini storage are for college students and residents needing temporary or long term storage, they seem to have a lower rates than other so I may try it out also.
