The Golden State filled up Friday night; co-owner James Starr serving up the goods

Despite the talk of a March 12 opening date, those lucky enough to be in the neighborhood (or to be nonchalantly tipped by owners Jason Bernstein and James Starr), were able to get a preview of what’s to come at The Golden State on Fairfax last Friday night.

The abbreviated menu offered a host of Let’s Be Frank dogs, slaw and potato salad, root beer, beer, wine and other beverages, Scoops Gelato and some spicy fries the husband and I deliciously slopped up with ketchup.

We both ordered the spicy beef dog, topped with just the right amount of sauteed onions and red bell pepper, and enveloped in a soft bun that, thankfully, did not swallow the dog (pet peeve of mine, the too-big bun). I got the slaw; the husband got the potato salad. The potato salad is made with red potatoes and not overly mayo-ed, subtle and tasty. I particularly liked the slaw, punched up with jalapeno and no mayo. Then came a batch of spicy fries, followed by Brown Bread and Pistachio Fig gelato for me and Kahlua Caramel for the husband. Everything is reasonable, making the total bill impressively low, even ordering the most expensive beer.

In terms of official opening date with full menu, I suspect it will be well before the March 12 slated date, and I’m telling you I cannot wait for that burger to roll out…

On a side note, Fairfax was buzzing that night, between The Golden State, a graffiti artist at Supreme and life drawing at Norm Maxwell Gallery. It was really nice to see the neighborhood so busy and vital.
