That’s City Council District 5 candidate Paul Koretz holding the sign above his head with the blue buttondown at the corner of Beverly and La Cienega—some last-minute campaigning in the works. I caught him last night around 5:30pm-ish as I was walking home, first from voting, then walking up to the Trader Joe’s on Santa Monica for dinner ingredients.
It surprised me to see him out there, and made me wonder if any of the other candidates were taking this literal hands-on approach that night, just hours before the polls were closing.
Koretz was doing something right, as the assemblyman will be heading to the runoff election for the seat with neighborhood council member David T. Vahedi May 19. Check all the results here. Following the top two was Adeena Bleich, Ron Galperin, Robyn Ritter Simon and Robert Schwartz.

I supported Vahedi so am glad with the outcome. But had he not succeeded, my second choice was Koretz. So as you can imagine I am delighted with the results. Either of these fine community/grassroots oriented progressive men will do a good job for our area. I’m still voting for Vahedi in the runoff, but won’t be bummed if he doesn’t eke it out. Whomever is the winner, just remember: more parking garages in popular shopping districts; parks, trails, paths for fitness/lifestyle enthusiasts; better public transportation; less supergraphics/billboards; less big box retailers/chains/strip shopping – more of the Silver Lake/Culver City organic neighborhood growth strategy (bakeries, coffee shops, bookstores, wine shops).
