Shops—Earnest Sewn Co-Founders Exit, Boutique Not Coming to Former Town Tire Co. on Beverly?

Earnest Sewn signed a lease in January, 2008 to open in the former Town Tire Co. space on Beverly Boulevard

Word came Tuesday from WWD that Earnest Sewn co-founders Scott Morrison (creative director of the label) and Eleanor Ylvisaker (PR director) have left the company, though retain a minority stake in the company. President of Earnest Sewn Michael Press told the fashion trade: “Scott and Eleanor did an outstanding job creating an iconic brand and an ideology within the company, but taking that concept and the brand to the next level is something the company’s been struggling with for a long time.”

All which made wonder what the heck was going on with the former Town Tire Co. space at 7501 Beverly Boulevard where Earnest Sewn was supposed to open up next, having opened up its Malibu outpost in October, 2008.

WWD notes “A lease for a fourth store on Beverly Boulevard in L.A. was signed in January 2008 but build-out permits are still being sought.” But a call to the Malibu store brought other news—a staffer there said that Earnest Sewn was no longer opening at the location, but that the company was scouting out other locations in LA to open a second shop. If this is the case, there are definitely going to be disappointed Beverly Boulevard shop owners, who thought the new addition may really bring more traffic to the burgeoning area.

All LA people do is eat and drink coffee all day – the DON’T shop – so the best use of that Tire Town location would be a terrific cafe w/indoor-outdoor seating. I’d love to see Huckleberry open a location there.

I’m bummed. For the neighborhood and for the company. I like the jeans and was stoked to see that space turn into an Eanrest Sewn. Oh well, maybe a cafe now.

That is a fantastic space. Someone should jump on it fast. A mixed concept cafe/store/hangout would be perfect. Just don’t tear it apart!
