Just in case you haven’t yet heard, very sadly the Cook’s Library at 8373 West 3rd Street is shuttering Thursday, April 30, after 20 years in the biz. The LAT Book Jacket reports owner Ellen Rose pointed to a loss of business due to Amazon:
“She and her staff might spend 30 minutes with a customer, she says, only to have them write down the recommendations and leave—to buy the books over the Internet, she thinks.”
Coupled by the bad economy, Rose is leaving her literary ode to food, for “possibly a soup kitchen—after the store closes.”
Requisite store-wide sales start next week.

Noooooooooooo! You have no idea how depressing this is.
I have purchased a bunch of books from them and I loved strolling over on Sats. with my little dog and browsing.
Man, soon there will be little left on third that I love.

This is sad. I purposely bought to books for an upcoming trip from the travel book store next door. I know I could have gotten from the internet or even taken a coupon to borders and paid less but I love the little retailers that aren’t guaging us for high end clothes.
I can only hope that the continued closing of shops will lower rents so that we may end up with a new wave of more reasonable stores and like always I will wish for a nice little yoga studio :)
