By the time the husband and I got to the sneak peek opening of gourmet churro spot Xorro at 8360 Melrose Avenue, just east of Marc by Marc Jacobs et al., there was one sample size dulce de leche-filled churro and one sample size nutella-filled churro left. I tried the dulce de leche, the husband tried the nutella.
The treats are soft and nearly melty on the inside and crisp on the outside, notably not at all greasy, due to Xooro’s use of rice bran oil. We were told by one of the key Xooro peeps that rice bran is used for tempura in Japan and healthier. Though I wouldn’t call this a low-calorie endeavor with specialty fritters including chocolate coconut, tiramisu, maple bacon and others, further sprinkled and rolled in sugary bits on the outside.
There are also drinks—either Spanish, Mexican or dulce de leche hot chocolate, as well as frozen chocolate, caramel, latte and other concoctions. Wednesday, June 24 from 5:30pm-7:30pm is another opp to try Xorro for free at its grand opening. If the dulce de leche is any indication, it’s worth popping in.

I’m baffled that they were able to open a second location. I tried them in Santa Monica and they’re fine, but at $4 each- that’s about 6 bites- they’re not worth it and I would never go back or recommend them.
Their 2.5 star yelp review seems to agree.

Anything made in Rice Bran Oil has to be good!!!
You can also buy rice oil for home use.
