DC’s SmartBikes left; Hyatt Regency also offers guests the chance to take a ride; click to expand
It’s not clear and sunny like it was on Saturday when I took these photos, casting a pretty glow on DC SmartBikes (at left) and the Hyatt Regency’s bikes lined up for guests’ use (at right). I was struck by how childlike the SmartBikes are, not aesthetically appealing in my opinion. I feel what America often misses is that design really matters; more people will use these things is they look great (look at the iPhone, iPod).
The subscription for the year is $40, which seems like a pretty decent price, except for the price you have to pay if you don’t return it in 24 hours—$550!—which seems completely ridiculous. The Hyatt bikes are nothing special either, but at least you wouldn’t feel like a ten-year-old cruising the streets of DC. Notably, there are a lot of peeps riding their own bikes, which is nice to see.

If they were too cute people would want to keep them.
