Shops—Folks Flustered Over Potential 7-Eleven on Fairfax

In case you missed in on Curbed (though 66 commenters certainly didn’t!), some panties are twisting at the possibility of a 7-Eleven going in at 369 North Fairfax Avenue, in the strip mall at Oakwood Avenue. Via the Park La Brea/Beverly Park News, the blog reports concerns from Andrew Lachman, president of the Mid City West Community Council, and Steve Kramer, president of the Miracle Mile Chamber of Commerce, regarding the chain’s beer and wine license, transients, and the selling of alcohol to underage kids:

“Lachman cited problems at another local 7-Eleven, at the corner of 3rd Street and Gardner Avenue, which was investigated the LAPD in July, 2007 for selling alcohol to inebriated transients and other people who would then give the alcohol to minors. Several citations were written during a sting operation held that summer.”

And from Kramer:

“The renaissance that is occurring there, particularly at Fairfax High School, just doesn’t warrant a convenience store…especially a store that seeks to be open 24-hours a day and wants a license for the sale of beer and wine. I think it is the wrong business in the wrong location.”

I will say this—though I can’t say 7-Eleven would be my first choice for a convenience store (the husband and I fantasize about improvements we’d make to our neighborhood spots), it would be terribly inconvenient to not have J Market or St. Regis around the way.

I’m sure if the potential 7-11 were owned and run by a family named, say, Lefkowitz, rather than Gupta or Singh, the neighbors wouldn’t mind.

Per the article in Park La Brea/Beverly Press News, the only 7-Eleven person named was Christina Reeder, who is the senior real estate representative for 7-Eleven
    incorporated…

I found the article to be extremely annoying. As it is early in the process and I am on the Land Use Committee for MCW, I would prefer it if the Chair of the Board would not comment – especially since he did not attend the preliminary meeting and does not know what was discussed.

I have my own feelings about 7-Elevens. I have seen good ones and bad ones; I hate the colors on the signs. As a former soccer mom I couldn’t have survived without them, but the one on Third and Gardner gives me the creeps.

There is a distinct possibility that they could go into the former pharmacy space without alcohol “by right” – which would mean nobody could tell them what to do. So let’s all take a breath and wait until they actually file with the City, give us renderings of what the space would look at, etc.

Miss Teresa….your awesome. I agree the signs are ugly and some are sketchier then others. However, I am not of a mind to say you can’t open a 7-11 in some neighborhood just because the neighbors don’t like it.

My dream is to get rid of the stink at 6th and Fairfax and take over the 99 Cent Only site – I would put in a corner grocery with a gourmet deli that served whatever I decided was on the menu that day. And I make a mean Cappuccino.

Maybe B&S, Alex and I could pool our resources and have a nice semi-retirement career running the place.

Well if you put together the business plan I will look at it. I am not 100% sold on that corner but who knows.

  • 7 Neighborhoods—Give Your Two Cents on Fairfax’s Proposed 7-Eleven // Jul 13, 2009 at 12:49 pm

As another member of MCWCC’s Land Use Committee, I strongly second the comments of Miss Teresa who found the article to be extremely annoying.

Another reason why this article was annoying which is above and beyond that which was cited by Miss Teresa, is that it was inaccurate. It indicated that the full Board would consider the 7-11 matter today. This inaccuracy, coming about because the article went to press before the Land Use Committee met, led some of the strongest opponents of the proposed Fairfax 7-11 to rally the neighbors to show up at the meeting, for naught.

Yes the 7-11 folks will eventually be back before the Land Use Committee and full Board… but it is often very difficult to get people to turn out for these meetings..and who knows if they’ll show up again after coming out for this issue tonight ? Their presence may very well make the difference on how the Committee and Board vote on this issue.

The bottom line is, we can’t be jerking people’s chains like this by providing questionable information for articles such as this one that ran in the Beverly Press.
