Neighborhoods—Give Your Two Cents on Fairfax’s Proposed 7-Eleven

If you’d like to voice your opinion of the proposed 7-Eleven at 369 North Fairfax Avenue, you can go to the hearing before the Mid City West Community Council Tuesday, July 14 at 7pm at the NCJW at 543 North Fairfax Avenue.

As indicated by a recent email to ‘Friends and Neighbors,’ Lenore Sachs of the Beverly Wilshire Homes Association is not a fan of the proposed convenience store:

“Judging from the complaints about transients, drunks, and loiterers who linger around the 3rd and Gardner 7-Eleven store, there’s a strong probability that the same kinds of behavior will be repeated at the new proposed location. Criminals found guilty of rape and murder had been customers of the 3rd and Gardner 7-Eleven, and gangs members can regularly be seen (allegedly) selling drugs and counterfeit DVDs around that location. Unfortunately, 7-Eleven has not done anything to discourage this kind of antisocial behavior. The lot behind it is littered with debris of all kinds, and Pan Pacific Park is used for these transients to ’sleep it off.’”

The email for those opposed to the store, my two cents on this email…

Sachs also provides an email for those opposed to the store (no2Fairfax711@gmail.com) to voice comments.

7-Eleven still reminds me of days of yore—walking as a kid to get a few Now and Laters, Bit-O-Honeys and the occasional Slurpee. Do convenience stores generally attract transients, alcoholics and loiterers? In varying degrees, depending on the location. But conjuring up ‘rapists,’ ‘murderers,’ and alleged ‘gang members’ is a bit much. And Pan Pacific Park is a public space. As long as someone’s not bothering anyone else, a homeless person gets to lay on the grass, too, not just the family having a picnic.

UPDATE: Please note the recent comment below from Charles L.

As a member of the MCW Land Use Committee, I must let you know that this item will NOT be on tomorrow night’s agenda.

There was no completed application at the time of the Land Use meeting, and thus the Committee decided to take no action until we had the specifics in front of us.

It will destroy the unique character of Fairfax. We don’t need a mega-chain and mega-branding on Fairfax…it’s the beginning of the end.

It will eat up tons of parking which the existing businesses need.

All 7-11’s do is sell bad stuff: junk food and sugar drinks for the kids (think childhood obesity and diabetes); booze, cigarettes, and lottery tickets (feeding gambling addictions) for the adults.

There will be a lot of loitering, some of the transients, homeless, and troublemakers will go there to buy their booze and smokes (leading to public drunkenness, public urination, soliciting the tourists, and worse) and kids creating problems while they are hopped up on sugar.

I’d rather see a positive business for kids to go to.

Does the world really need another 7-11 ??
