There have been no formal plans filed with the city yet, but B and F Associates LLC, which has owned the Regency Fairfax Theaters building on the northwest corner of Beverly Boulevard and Fairfax Avenue for 10-plus years, has its sights on turning the theater and handful of other shops into a 71-unit condo complex with 12,000 square feet of ground-level retail and underground parking, per the Beverly Press.
Ira Handelman, a consultant on the project for Santa Monica-based B and F, told the paper that “the theaters would not be retained…no decision has been made on whether any of the existing tenants would stay in the retail space,” but that the “new building would retain the existing facade of the theater.” Notably, there has been a theater in the building since 1929.
I will be bummed out to lose this theater—bargain prices ($5-$8!) and always an intriguing selection (from The Girl from Monaco to The Big Lebowski, Wet Hot American Summer to Labyrinth). I mean, come on, The Neverending Story will be there September 25, totally awesome!

Gotta love the $1 hot dogs and the cheap and diverse snax.
And the people who work the snack and ticket counter are really nice.

Don’t worry, in this economy and with the glut of apartments available, especially on Wilshire, the chances of this being torn down anytime soon are minimal. I’d love, however, to see the neighboring retailers (especially that cheap dish place) get bulldozed – and soon.

I guess traffic at that corner isn’t bad enough already and empty storefronts/condos are more desirable than the theatre. At least the tenants will be able to walk to a new 7-11 if that gets approved.
