Word that an eyeglasses shop would be coming to the former Devon Leigh space at 8026 West 3rd Street has been confirmed with the opening of Optical Sphere, which relocated from Melrose and La Jolla after 15 years. And while owner Alex—a quirky Russian guy with a true passion for specs—is sad to leave his 1,500-square-foot space for his now cozier digs (the victim of a major rent hike), I’m totally thrilled to have him in the neighborhood.
First of all, how did I not know about his shop on Melrose?
While he has modern offerings, the real find here is his vast collection of vintage and antique frames (lots of deadstock), some dating as far back as the 1700s. You’ll find goggles from WWI, frames from WWII, tons from the 1950s-1970s. Seriously, he’s got stock of some 40,000 frames, 6,000-7,000 antiques and vintage! As such, his shop is loaded with glasses, out in the open for the trying. Which all I can say it, fun, fun, fun, dress up for the eyes.
If you want to throw down money for designer specs, he has that too (he’ll show you photos of Brad Pitt and Elton John in his shades, and rents out glasses to movies), but he has great deals, including being able to leave his shop with frames and prescription lenses for $150. Check ‘em out for yourself Tue-Fri 10am-6pm and Sat 11am-5pm (closed Sun and Mon).
