It was a truly lovely evening last night at a gallery space on Melrose Place, where Corey Lynn Calter hosted a three-course dinner to accompany a short film featuring her spring/summer 2010 collection. The city’s top fashion folks filled the seats—designer Magda Berliner, Decades’ Cameron Silver, A+R owners Rose Apodaca and Andy Griffith, stylist Jessica Paster, boutique owner Hillary Rush, and writers/editors such as LAT’s Melissa Magsaysay, Fashion Week Daily’s Jennifer Chan, Style Section LA’s Emili Vesilind and more. Rachel Leigh Cook gave her support in a saturated turquoise ruffled CLC dress. I dittoed the dress, which was momentarily awkward, until Cook graciously said: “You know, I think we should just stand next to each other and get over it!”

More on the event, the film and Calter’s take on LA Fashion Week, and lots of candle-lit photos…

The presentation spread across three walls of the gallery space, with the effect of models walking around the room. An unseen interviewer asked each model a question; the answers, seemingly spontaneous, were in fact taken from page 105 of Robert Evans’ The Kid Stays in the Picture, and lent a playful, comedic element to the film.

“I wanted to show how the collection represents different girls,” Calter said of the idea for the film, “from eccentric to romantic and very pretty to rock but never entirely hard.” Indeed, the film allowed the collection to literally speak, but the dialogue was really in the looks—a mini, one-sleeve shift in a ‘royal kitties’ print, fluttery florals, a drape-y pleated and tucked deep purple dress, stripes paired with stripes and pleasing asymmetry at necklines or on skirts.

Calter wanted to do something other than a typical runway show; she also still wanted to participate and support LA Fashion Week, noting that LA Fashion Week has seemed to have “lost its confidence.” It was evident that the event worked to bolster attendees confidence, one person shouting out post presentation: “That was the most inspirational thing in LA I’ve ever seen!”

If there were only more evenings like this!

R.A, I second that! It would make me leave my house in the evenings willingly.
