The first time I saw George Esquivel’s shoes—then only for men—was at Douglas Fir, lined up gorgeously, impeccably crafted. He was definitely doing something. This year he’s a CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund Finalist, an incredibly prestigious fashion award (he’s profiled with the other contenders in this month’s Vogue) which will be announced (the winner and two runners-up) November 16. The title comes with a cash prize of $200,000 and an industry mentor. Needless to say, he’s been very busy these days: “Ah, it’s crazy,” he says, “but all good.”
It was at Satine last Thursday, where owner Jeannie Lee is now carrying Esquivel offerings, which these days includes plenty for women. He was zipping around, helping attendees such as David Arquette, order multiple pairs of his bespoke, immediately comfy lace-ups and boots (and boots with lace-ups). And while you will pay custom prices, you can get exactly what you want. A style slightly taller? Different color combination? More room here or there? They will be perfect. They will be coveted. And they will last forever.
Good news for nabes is that Esquivel has a showroom just behind Douglas Fir, where shopping friends-and-family events are held periodically where deals are for the taking.

I would wrestle Mr. Esquivel for his blue shoes.
