The husband and I made it over to House Cafe at 8112 Beverly Boulevard, just opened last Thursday and helmed by Bruce Marder (Capo, Broadway Deli, Cora’s, Brentwood) and chef-ed by Ricky Moreno of Capo. It was Friday night and clearly the word had gotten out, as the place already had a steady flow of customers at the tables and the bar. And the cafe felt like it had already been open for some time with prompt and good service, I’m sure reflective of Marder’s veteran status in the industry.
It happens sometimes—the husband orders exactly what I’m thinking of ordering. Rather than trying to have some ordering diversity for the table, I said f*ck it, and ordered the spare rib tacos too. I was not disappointed. The meat was tender, and the sprinkle of onions and fresh cilantro was just right. I also liked the mild beans that accompanied.
For dessert, we split the ice cream sandwiches, which came with vanilla ice cream between small graham cracker-y, chocolate cookies and a side of fresh cream. I was actually relieved it wasn’t too much, especially after downing those two tacos.
Pricing seemed pretty fair. The tacos were $16, and I noticed many $6/glass wine choices. I’m definitely looking forward to returning.

I went to House on Saturday for a late lunch and while I really, really wanted to like this “cafe,” particularly since I live within walking distance, unfortunately, I don’t think I will be returning. In summary, the prices are WAY too high for what you’re getting. $16 for 2 carnitas tacos (granted there was a lot of meat, but that’s $8/taco)?! Our lunch bill totaled $55.00 (incl. tax and tip). At that price point, I’d rather go to other nearby restaurants, like BLD or Allora. They either need to lower their prices or serve higher end food at more expensive prices. That’s my opinion anyway.

I can definitely see feeling $55 is too much for lunch; to me, for dinner, $55 feels pretty good….
